NASA explorer schools summer research experience

This blog has been a long time in the works, sitting as a word file on my desktop being modified little by little for many months, yet with recent news that the national budget cuts are going to have an impact on NASA's outreach and education I thought now is a good a time as ever to get this thing finished and posted. With that said, I’m not exactly sure how all of the changes are going to go down yet, it kind of seems like the goal of streamlining/eliminating overlap sounds good, but the execution is not exactly clear yet. Nevertheless, I'm hoping for the best.

My NASA Explorer Schools (NES) summer research experience actually started at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year when I was part of an online training to learn how to us the NES virtual campus. (Sidenote: If you're a science teacher, you should be part of NASA explorer schools... I hope you agree by the time you're don reading this!) I spent lots of time exploring and used a ton of NES resources in my classroom, including NASA Now videos and lesson plans. My favorite lesson plan is Transit Tracks, where the students analyze graphs of Kepler Telescope data to determine the orbital period and size of extrasolar planets. In March, the application for teacher recognition was available, and on April 11th, I found out I'd be spending a week in July in Baltimore at the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins. The "More to Light than Meets the Eye" workshop was my first choice, so I was beyond excited. I spent the whole summer looking forward to my trip. 

My flight to Baltimore was early in the morning, and I was one of the first to arrive. I picked up one of the rental cars and another attendee, Diana, who had arrived from Puerto Rico. We found our way to the hotel, which was really nice, and right across the street from Johns Hopkins, where the Space Telescope Science Institute is located. In the evening, we all met up for the first time for a fabulous Italian dinner and lots of fun!


We met each other and our wonderful NES leader, Jordan.  I was seriously amazed by the amazing group of educators NES was able to pull together, and I knew we were going to have a ton of fun learning together for the next few days.




Day one started bright and early with a full day at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Here’s the whole group ready to start the day!

We spent the day learning about Hubble, James Webb, different types of light, infrared light, and stellar spectra. Here are some cold hands in infrared!

Though I knew most of the basics already, it was really cool to learn all about the plans for James Webb years before it even launches, and it’s also always fun to see these topics from a student point of view.

Day two
Our second day ran from 9:30-4:00 as well and I don’t think I’ve ever had my brain quite as full as it was by the end of our second day. More presentations, more activities… lots of fun! We learned about the search for exoplanets, we did a Hubble Deep Field activity (which I actually just did in my class with my students a few weeks ago!) and about World Wide Telescope. Absolutely everything was fun, but I think the most fun was learning about the science from the people who are actually doing the science. I’m so appreciative that they took their time to talk to us, and many of them seemed to appreciate that we were there! What’s even cooler though, is that I’ve seen a few of the people who presented to us on twitter, at the AAS in Long Beach and even as writers for articles in Astronomy magazine. How cool, right?? Not only did we get to spend the day at STSci, we got to take a trip to the Inner Harbor to play in the science center for a few hours.

Day three was our day to go to Goddard! I was really really excited about everything… as you can probably tell from the photos. I decided after being at Goddard, I really want to try to visit all the NASA centers eventually. I’ll be going to JPL this summer, and I’m hoping to get to Houston really soon ;)

And, as if 2 days at STSci and a day at Goddard wasn’t awesome enough, why not a few hours in the Nation’s Capital?! I took a WHIRLWIND tour of the Smithsonian… aka I ran around like a mad woman to try to see everything.

But, I did take a break for the spaceflight academy trivia game. I was player 11- flight ready!

I was accepted to another Summer Research Experience this year, but I had to decline because I already had plans to attend Space Camp, Caltech, and I have a summer job. I was devastated, because the opportunity was at NASA Glenn in Cleveland to work with spacecraft engineers, but I’m beyond thrilled for the teachers that were chosen for that experience and all the others that are happening this summer. some awesome things from this school year...

Just because I haven't blogged, doesn't mean we're not having fun! 


My students and I have been part of some really cool things this year. Here are the top 7:

7. I was on the radio! XL 106.7 came to broadcast from our school thanks to our cheerleaders, and I was on to talk about NITARP and how awesome science is! My principal took this photo after I was done chatting :) 

6. Kennedy Space Center
Even though some of my students made some not so wise choices, we all made it home safe and dry despite the downpours and it was an awesome day. So many of them, even though they live in Florida, had never been to Kennedy Space Center before our field trip. They all had a great time and one student made a video of her time there. 5. Robotics - League Championships
It was an awesome day. We were in first after qualifying, picked another rookie team as our alliance partner, and won the whole thing! We also won the motivate award for being enthusiastic and spreading the FIRST robotics fun. :)

4. Robotics - State Championships 
As if that wasn't enough, we made it to states (the top 24 out of about 80 teams go, and we were 18th). Though our robot took a few hits, we still had a ton of fun. If you've never been to a FIRST robotics tournament before, you should go. It's NERD heaven. We made a good impression on the judges, were called back, and we won the State Motivate award too!

The team is fantastic  and what might be the best thing about it is they're all juniors or freshmen! We've still got lots of time for more robot fun! 2. Epcot - IBM Think
I went to a really cool workshop in January, and I was tweeting about how cool it was all day. A woman from IBM caught it, and asked me to come speak at the press conference for the opening of the exhibit. It was crazy. I spoke after the VP of Epcot and the VP of IBM. It was pretty surreal. It was really fun too, because I got to take 2 awesome teacher friends along, my 7th period, and my GEMS girls. :) 






1. Google+ Hangout
We talked to astronauts. 5 of them. 2 on the ground. 3 on the space station. It was unplanned until the day before... but that's the way teaching is sometimes! :) I got a call from NASA explorer schools during 6th period, and they told me that someone canceled and they were wondering if I could do a g+ hangout with astronauts the next day.... and when you get a call like that, you say yes.

Then we connected with the Space Station at 29:35 and our last question about robots is at 56:35! This was the craziest thing EVER, and I loved every minute of it!

You can probably tell why I haven't had much time to write lately :)  Off to grade papers... one week til spring break!

hello blog readers!

I've come to the realization that blogging during the school year is near impossible, which isn't the greatest thing. I feel like reflecting on what I'm going through (an awesome experience like NITARP or just everyday teaching) helps me to process and get better. Things have been pretty great when it comes to NITARP, my team and I finished our proposal and were the first to send it in! Now we’re just waiting to hear back from the team who reads them as to corrections/improvements so we can revise.

We started our actual research this week and it’s really fun. I've never done research like this before, and I’m so glad I can now. When I did research in college it was mostly for geology stuff, and it was so different than this. Each member of the team had to go through the process of finding a star in the Kepler data database, normalizing that data, creating a periodogram for a specific date range, recording some data, making a phased curve, then phase binning the data in this CRAZY excel spreadsheet that one of our scientists made. The first one took me about 20 minutes to do, but I cut it down to about 10 minutes per star by the last few. I kind of wish I understood the math behind it all a little better for when I have to explain it to my students, but every time I look something up the internet just spits all kinds of calculus back at me… and I’m just not quite there anymore. (Maybe I could have figured it out when I was in calc in college… but definitely not now.) All I kept thinking the whole time was I wonder if this is really what it’s like to be an astronomer, and if it is, I want in. I obviously love teaching, but I think after talking to my students for 7 years about how what scientists do is so cool, actually doing it myself makes me realize that it really is so cool (hooray for not being a big liar!). I think the coolest thing about this whole project is also that our scientists aren't even sure if this is going to work, and at this point, I don’t really know if I want it to or not. Sure, it’d be cool for it to work out and for us to have something awesome to share with everyone, but what scientist hasn't struggled a few times with figuring something out? Just being part of this is awesome enough for me.

The rest of this blog is a little more about looking toward the future though, so fasten the seat belts kids, this summer has the potential to be the greatest ever! J I already know that toward the end of the summer, I'll be going to Caltech for part 2 of 3 of the NITARP experience. I have to choose the students I'm going to bring with me soon, but I only had about 6 apply. I really hope all of them participate at school, even though I can only bring 2 with me to California. 

But right now, I'm very impatiently awaiting some news on three other things. First, I'm waiting to hear on if I got into the Honeywell sponsored Educator Space Academy in Huntsville. Applications were due December 14th, but I finished mine in October, so needless to say, I just really want to know already. I'm not the only impatient one, as there are quite a few people posting on the Honeywell Educator facebook page, but from what I've heard, it should be by the end of March. There hasn't been any official posting anywhere on behalf of Honeywell though, so I'm a little frustrated by that. I only got my answer via a tweet from the folks at Space Camp. :) 

I also just applied for NASA explorer schools summer research experience (like the one I went to in Baltimore last summer). According to their website, I'm supposed to be notified if I was accepted by April 12th. The deadline was March 15th, so this one (thankfully) has a much quicker turn around time! It looks like the format is a little different this year, but like last year; I had to pick my top 3 choices. I went with Orion MPCV Research Experience, Mobile and Remote Sensing Lab Research Experience, and Simulated Lunar Operations Facility Research Experience. Think they sound cool? Then you should sign up to be a NASA Explorer Schools teacher! http://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/national/nes2/home/index.html . I really hope I'm accepted to one or both of these, but Teacher Space Camp could occur on one of two weeks in June, and one of those is the same week as the summer experience. Fingers crossed I’m chosen for both and can make it work!  

But, even if I'm accepted to both, there's another opportunity that I'm really REALLY hoping I'm chosen for… and I’d be willing to do just about anything for it. I got an email a few weeks ago (when I was still smiling on the bus on the way home from Epcot with my students) from a person at our county office that Kennedy Space Center has ONE opening this summer for a teacher intern. The application was also due March 15th, but I was so excited I sent mine in on February 27th. Needless to say, I'll be super disappointed if I'm not chosen, but I think my application was pretty good. The internship is with the Ground Systems Development and Operations Program, the people who take care of the crawler/launch pads/VAB... yes, really(!!!). You can learn more about them here: http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/ground/index.html  and here: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/pdf/642081main_gsdo.pdf .  From what the application said, it looks like the internship involves creating an education program for them that others can use to teach students about what the GSDO does, especially in the transition time and in the future. I did a bit of research, and lots of the stuff that I have in my classroom from them is all about shuttle. How exciting would it be to learn all about all the cool stuff they’re making happen now and doing to prepare for the future? I’ve pretty much been in love with the idea of this internship since I’ve heard about it, and any positive vibes you could send my way would be very much appreciated.
